Berry Wisdom

 by Karen Loyster

To discriminate
the way blackberry fingers do would be a gift.
The fingers know by touch after a sunny hour
which berry is too young or too soft,
which berry will come away easily
keeping its perfect summer flavor.
The fingers grow purple with their cleverness.

If I could know day to day as my fingers know
quickly berry to berry,
I would be so wise...
Perhaps I would turn purple all over.
